Sandy Koufax, born Sanford Braun and nicknamed The Left Arm of God, was born on this day in 1935 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Koufax, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972, posted a 2.76 ERA.
From 1956 through 1960, Koufax never had an ERA under 3.88 in a season, never won more than 11 games in a season while winning more than 10 games just once and had an ERA of 4.05 or more three different years. Koufax had trouble with his control, too, walking 105 batters in 1958 and 100 batters in 1960.
Those certainly are not Hall of Fame numbers.
But what Koufax did from 1961 through 1966 puts him in the discussion as possibly baseball?s greatest pitcher ever.
During those years, Koufax led the NL in ERA five straight times (1962-1966), in wins three times, in shutouts three times, in complete games twice and in strikeouts four different times.
