Whites Only Dating: Make the White Decision!

Are you white? And looking to date other people who are also white?

Then wow, you're in luck, because whitesonlydating (dot) com is here! An ad for the fake online relationship site was posted on Reddit earlier today in all its Caucasian glory.

The most hilarious part - besides the surprisingly in-depth breakdown of the different shades of white - is that to a non-white individual, this is probably what most ads for legitimate dating sites seem like ... as well as The Bachelor.

West Nile Virus Cases Hit 1,590; Death Toll at 66

Reported by Tiffany Chao, M.D., ABC News Medical Unit:

Reports of West Nile virus infection in the country now total 1,590, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday - an increase of more than 40 percent in one week alone.

CDC officials also reported during a Wednesday afternoon teleconference that 66 people have died from the disease so far. Of all of the cases reported thus far, 889 - or 56 percent - are classified as neuroinvasive, meaning patients develop meningitis, encephalitis or paralysis.

These figures represent a striking increase from last week's report of 1,118 cases, 629 of which were neuroinvasive, and 41 deaths.

Still, officials say they anticipated that these numbers would go up over time.

"This increase is not unexpected," said Dr. Lyle R. Petersen, director of the division of vector-borne infections diseases from the CDC, during the teleconference. "In fact, the total numbers will continue to rise through October."

He also said that while the overall numbers will continue to accumulate throughout mosquito season, he expects the incidence of infections to have peaked in mid- to late-August. This peak may vary between Northern and Southern states.

CDC officials estimate that, based on current numbers, the final tally of overall U.S. cases will likely be similar to the number of cases seen in 2002 and 2003, during which time more than 3,000 cases of neuroinvasive West Nile Virus and more than 260 deaths were reported.

While all 48 continental states have reported cases of West Nile infections, more than 70 percent of the reported cases are in Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Michigan.

Texas has been hardest hit, with 783 reported cases - nearly half of the total number documented thus far. The health department in Texas has been vigilant about preventing further infections through aerial spraying.

"Assuming a normal progression [of cases], this will be our worst year with West Nile," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. He highlights the grim statistics in Texas. "In 2003, there were 439 neuroinvasive cases, compared 416 already this year. In 2003, there were 40 deaths, and now we're at 31."

Since the CDC does not recommend routine testing of people with West Nile fever, it is likely that there are far more infections than the current numbers suggest. Approximately 80 percent of patients infected with West Nile virus will not develop any type of illness. The remaining 20 percent experience symptoms including fever, headache, malaise, body aches, and occasionally a rash or swollen lymph nodes.

There is no specific treatment for West Nile. The disease itself may run its course in as short as a few days or as long as several weeks.

The virus is most dangerous when it becomes neuroinvasive; in these cases, patients can experience symptoms as severe as coma, seizures, muscle weakness and paralysis. The CDC estimates that only about 1 in 150 people who contract West Nile virus will develop the neuroinvasive form, but nearly all of these patients will require hospitalization.

Of these, those with encephalitis are in the greatest danger, as they are frequently left with severe neurologic deficits. Ten percent of patients who develop encephalitis die. Of the patients who develop paralysis from the disease, one third will recover nearly completely, one third will be left with residual weakness, and one third will not recover.

CDC officials said it is unlikely that Hurricane Isaac will play a role in the severity of the outbreak.

"Based on previous experience, floods and hurricanes do not result in increased transmission of West Nile Virus," said Petersen. He notes that although there will likely be no noticeable effect on the current epidemic, a small increase had been noted in some areas of Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, likely because of increased outdoor exposure when houses were severely damaged.

In light of the ongoing risk, the CDC encourages everyone to protect themselves from mosquitoes. While many health departments have made mosquito-control efforts, such as aerial and ground spraying, people are encouraged to protect themselves from mosquito bites using basic techniques.

"Use insect repellents, wear long-sleeved clothing during dawn and dusk, install and repair window screens, use air-conditioners when possible, empty standing water, and support local community mosquito control programs," Peterson says.

There is currently no vaccine to protect humans from the West Nile virus, although four effective vaccinations exist for horses. A few of related vaccines are in early clinical trials (Phase I and II) in humans, which have been successful. However, no vaccine has yet been taken to Phase III clinical trials.

Insurance a must for travel ? Chris Cruises ? Salazarjamaal's blog ...

Insurance a must for travel

During hurricane season, severe weather is common and? frequently impacts the plans of travelers.? Weather-related flight delays can lead to missed air connections and cruise departures or even result in travelers being stranded. One of the best ways to be prepared for potential severe weather is with a comprehensive travel insurance plan that includes comprehensive trip cancellation, interruption and travel delay, as well as 24-hour assistance and emergency travel services.

Should an insured be forced to cancel a trip due to a covered reason such as a named hurricane, travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage can reimburse those insured for pre-paid nonrefundable expenses, up to the limit of coverage purchased.

Keep in mind that travel insurance must be purchased before the hurricane is named.

Travel insurance can be purchased through a number of companies.? I like Travelguard because they have been easy to get in touch with when questions come up, prices are reasonable and they pay quickly when a properly documented claim is submitted in a timely manner.? Travel Guard can also help when severe weather conditions force the evacuation of an insured?s hotel or resort. Fortified trip costs and additional travel expenses can be reimbursed.

All of Travel Guard?s most popular plans also include 24-hour, 7-day assistance for emergency medical needs or referrals, assistance with cash transfers, replacement of lost travel documents, pre-trip health and safety advisories and e-mail and phone messaging to family and friends.? This can come in really handy if stranded in an airport when flights are canceled for weather-related reasons.

It?s important to know what is and what is not covered before buying .? Many who buy travel insurance find out the hard way that it does not cover cancellation because an insured is scared to sail, does not like the modified itinerary due to weather/ safety concerns or just changed their minds.? You would be surprised how many calls I get on this.

I found out the hard way that travel insurance does not cover everything one might think it does. ? It was on a cruise I had planned for our family and one of our daughters wanted to bring a boyfriend.?? The cruise was a few months off and I doubted this guy?s ability to capture our daughters attention for that length of time so I played it safe and bought travel insurance on him.

If he fell off the ship and broke his neck, picked up an exotic disease in Jamaica or needed assistance with his delayed flight or lost luggage, we would have been covered.? Being dumped: no coverage for that.? It was a great lesson to learn that travel insurance is good stuff to have if we understand it.? Way too many people buy it thinking it covers everything including hurricanes.? It does but sort of indirectly.

Delayed flights, evacuations and other expenses, as noted, can be reimbursed.? They?re there to help in case of emergency with 24-hour assistance available which might not sound like much of a benefit sitting there all cozy and warm at home right now.? Wait until you?re knee-deep in canceled flights, delayed travel plans or other covered events.? All of the sudden that assistance is worth its weight in gold.

Wrong number leads to musical connection

Kathy Dressler developed a unique approach for teaching groups of students to play violin over her 30-year career as a music teacher.?

It?s a method she used 15 years ago with underprivileged students in La Crosse, and now that Dressler has returned to the area, she?s coming out of retirement.

All thanks to a wrong number.

Dressler, who started teaching music in 1982, used games and physical imitation to instill good form and prevent bad habits that are nearly impossible to correct later on.

Typically, violin is taught one on one, with the instructor turning the student?s head just so, guiding their fingers on the neck, their grip on the bow.

?String playing is really a pretty physical activity,? said Buzz Hoefer, a former instructor and director of orchestral studies at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse who collaborated with Dressler. ?If you?re leading up front, you need to have exact directions to students. Put your left foot here, your right foot here. She called them fiddle feet. Everything she did was very, very specific.?

In the mid-1990s, Dressler was assigned to Hamilton Elementary for the second time, and noticed the demographics had changed. Many of the children qualified for free and reduced-price lunch, and test scores were suffering.

?The kids just weren?t thriving,? she said. ?I started talking to people. What can we do here??

One day, she got a note in her mailbox from Sheila Garrity, executive director of the La Crosse Foundation. Dressler had no idea who Garrity was, but returned the call.

Garrity had heard that Dressler had ideas; she had money to fund them.

The result was a partnership between the foundation, the school district and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in which Dressler gave string lessons to classes of third- and fourth-graders.

The program was a success by all accounts.

?Teaching in groups, she?s as good as there is,? Hoefer said. ?Their physical approach to their instruments was fantastic ? better than almost any program I?d seen where they were getting individual instruction.?

The kids didn?t just excel at violin; they showed improved self-esteem, as well as test scores.

But in 2000, Dressler moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to her husband, who?d been transferred there for his job.

?It broke my heart,? she said of the decision to leave.

Dressler returned to the area in 2010 after her husband died. When she moved into an Onalaska condo, she started getting phone calls for Lynn Spicer, whose number it turned out was just one off.

She had no idea who Spicer was.

One day this spring, she got a voice mail for Lynn from Steve Koch, a retired music teacher who wanted Spicer to accompany his gospel choir.

Dressler recognized Koch?s name and realized Spicer must have something to do with music. He?d left his number, so she gave him a call and they soon figured out their mutual connections.

?It was a comedy of errors,? Koch said.

Koch knew Spicer needed a strings teacher for her Onalaska studio; he suggested she give Dressler a call.

Dressler said she wasn?t interested in giving private lessons, but she mentioned she had a technique for group lessons if Spicer had the space.

?In a group I have more control,? Dressler said. ?I want a higher degree of performance in the end. I want their setup to be perfect, their tone to be good. I don?t want to be the remedial teacher.?

Spicer said her studio, which she started five years ago, is one of the few with space for 10 kids. And the two music teachers ? each with three decades of experience ? hit it off.

?We connected on every professional level,? Spicer said. ?She?s very enthusiastic and yet strict. She knows what she?s doing.?

Starting this fall, they will offer ?HeartStrings,? a year-long instruction for 20 third-graders.

Dressler said it?s an opportunity for kids to start playing at the ideal age ? a chance to get a head start on school programs, which generally being in fourth grade.

?Third-graders are primed for this delivery,? Dressler said. ?They will be models wherever they go.?

And with group lessons, students can learn for about half the cost of one-on-one instruction. Dressler sees it as a gift to the community.

?I want to give the arts a vitamin B12 shot,? Dressler said, ?provide well-trained leaders.?

Common Dental Pulp Diseases That Can Cause Bad Breath

Did you know that inadequate oral hygiene could cause dental pulp diseases and bad breath? Poor dental hygiene could lead to tooth loss and bad breath if not immediately cured. This is the main reason why you are suffering from bad breath and tooth decay. Good practice of oral hygiene at home includes regular brushing of teeth for at least two to three times a day, regular flossing after brushing your teeth and regular check up to your dentist. If you do not follow the proper oral hygiene, it will lead to cavities and bad breath later. Untreated cavities could affect the pulp of your teeth or the soft center of your teeth that could lead to tooth loss and bad breath.

Usually, the symptoms or signs of pulp disease include pulpitis, dental pulp exposure or degeneration and another is dental pulp classification. Pulp disease usually occurs due to bacterial infection, radiation and chemical reasons. The bacteria attack the upper layer of your teeth like your dentin and enamel and develop later into a pulp. If these pulp diseases could not be cured immediately, it will cause bad breath and by reading some topics like bad breath remedies you can prevent bad breath to develop.

The inflammation of the pulp is called pulpitis and it includes two different types known as irreversible and reversible pulpitis. The inflammation usually occurs during a traumatic experience due to multiple restorations of your tooth. Usually, the physical symptom of the so-called pulpitis is pain. It begins with reversible condition which is acute and chronic. Irreversible pulpitis is usually responsive to hot and cold foods or weather. The chronic symptoms of irreversible pulpitis include hyperplastic pulpitis and internal resorption.

The pulp exposure or degeneration on the other hand is a condition that is mostly seen in older people. The symptoms include mild irritation on your teeth that leads to pulp degeneration and this is due to bacteria and erosion of your teeth. If the pulp progresses, it will lead to discoloration of your teeth. It could also damage the covering of your teeth that will lead to cavities, bad breath and cracking of your teeth. The treatment usually includes root canal procedure and extractions of your teeth.

The dental pulp calcification or sometimes called dental pulp stone is the hardening of the pulp tissue. This is the result of extreme pain when there is a compression of the dental nerves. To clear away the hardened tissue, a root canal is the best procedure to clear the hardened tissue.

The treatment of dental pulp diseases usually includes root canal therapy. This therapy is being done by your dentist or endodontist. The pulp disease is being removed and the empty space and the root canal is cleaned properly. It is recommended that dental pulp diseases must be treated by your dentist to avoid cavities and bad breath. The bad breath remedies online can give you some idea to cure bad breath.

'Runway's' real model: Show was 'adult bullying'

Lifetime

Terri Herlihy and Ven Budhu during judging on "Project Runway."

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Terri Herlihy is still hurting from her experience on the "Fix My Friend" episode of "Project Runway" that aired Aug. 23. During the episode, which featured real women who had been nominated by their friends to appear on the show for a makeover, viewers saw?Herlihy repeatedly insulted by designer Ven Budhu and brought to tears.

He insinuated she was fat numerous times, telling her that all of the belts were too small for her, said that she had no sense of style, no shape, that her before photo was "a nightmare." He mentioned several times that she was 40 and a size 14.?

In reality, Herlihy told The Clicker, she was a size 10 during filming, and had turned 36 just two days before. And her experience on the show was worse than what Lifetime aired, she said.

Herlihy told us that during filming, she was "bullied" into wearing no shoes or accessories. In fact, Herlihy said, she and her friend Theo Thomas (the pal who brought her on the show) had to go rummaging in "Runway's" accessories bins themselves because Budhu, who was supposed to figure out her look from head-to-toe as part of the challenge, was going to send her down the runway for judging without any accessories. "My friend found the shoes. My friend found the belt. My friend did it all," she said. "She laid into him, but they didn't show that."

"I think (the producers) did a great job of editing it because it was so much worse than what was shown," Herlihy told us. "They edited it to my advantage because I would've kept looking stupider on TV."

Herlihy said that even though the episode was edited to her advantage, it was still tough to watch.

"I was horrified watching the show with my three daughters," she said. "I let him bully me, but I didn't know what he was saying behind the scenes when I wasn't around, in the confessional. It was hard to explain to my kids, 'Yeah, he was mean, but it didn't bother Mommy,' even though it did. I have to let them know something. It's how you teach your kids not?to do?this."

She also said that she didn't react on the show because she wanted to teach her children not to be prejudiced or be bullies.?Had she known just how bad it got behind her back, though, Herlihy said she wouldn't have let her daughters -- ages 14, 11 and 8 -- watch the show.

But?the controversy?didn't end with the taping. As the episode aired Thursday, Budhu continued to hurl insults at Herlihy via Twitter, saying?she had no personality and blaming editing for making him look like the bad guy. He has since deleted the tweets and offered up an apology. "I feel awful and I sincerely apologize to my client and viewers as (my)?remarks were unintentional," he wrote.

Herlihy said she was disappointed that Budhu wasn't eliminated for his behavior and after essentially failing the challenge to create makeover-worthy fashions for a real-world client.

"If he would've gone home, that would've been a different story," Herlihy said. "But because they kept him, that's why I feel like (it's) not only putting me down, but putting down every person who isn't a size 6 or below. How many people has he hurt or affected in some way from all his comments?"

Sean Herlihy / Courtesy of Terri Herlihy

Terri Herlihy and her husband, Sean.

"So it looks like?(the show's producers are)?all for it ... because it was adult bullying at its best about my weight," she added. "I can't imagine all the girls, women, teenagers watching that show who are bigger than me and what they think."

Herlihy and a friend have since launched a Facebook page called Terri's Redemption to draw attention to the bullying she experienced and to try to prevent other women from feeling discriminated against because of their clothing size.

Lifetime has not yet replied to requests for comment.

Herlihy and her friend Theo weren't the only ones who were appalled by Budhu's behavior. The 36-year-old said that designer Gunnar Deatherage, who treated his own model like a prized client, saw how upset she was and tried to make her "Runway" experience a bit better.

"Gunnar actually stuck up for me, and he spoke to hair and makeup that day and explained to them what was going on," Herlihy revealed. Part of the challenge includes the designers telling the hair and makeup folks how they'd like their models to look. "(I understand that)?they didn't really take Ven's directions of what he wanted my hair and makeup to be. So I'm very thankful for Gunnar. And that wasn't aired on the show, and I wish it was."?

Deatherage wasn't the only one who wanted to make things right. Michael Costello, who finished fourth in season eight and third in "Project Runway: All Stars," took to Twitter Thursday night and offered to make Herlihy a dress.

"I just wanted to do something for her that makes her happy, something that she can enjoy," Costello told us. The designer himself was bullied by a fellow contestant during his first run on the show.

Like Herlihy, he thought Budhu should've been auf'ed. "It would've been right if they would've eliminated him," Costello said. "Nathan's dress wasn't actually that bad compared to what Ven did. (Nathan) achieved the challenge. His client was happy."

But auf'ed or not, the "Runway" alum thinks Budhu's career might not be able to recover.

"I think he literally destroyed his fashion career with this episode," Costello said. "I don't think any woman would want to wear anything from him ever again after seeing the way Terri was treated. ... It's sad because he's a great talent, he's very skilled."

Costello also said he wondered if there was something more the show could've done. "I think a PSA message would've been very powerful at that point," he said. "But also doing something about empowering women and making women feel good, because that's what the episode was about."

Do you think there was more the show could have done to address Ven's treatment of Terri? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Venezuela has one of the highest murder rates in the world, and illegal firearms are prevalent. More than 130,000 illegal arms were turned into the state last year as part of a pilot disarmament program.

As in many countries in the Western Hemisphere, a vigorous debate is going on in Venezuela about how to control the possession and use of illegal weapons.? Amid a climate of extreme ideological polarization and varied political agendas, perceptions and misinformation have shaped much of the opinion surrounding the arms debate in Venezuela. Even the number of guns has become a point of contention; opponents to the Chavez government claim that there exist 15 million illegal arms in a country with a total population of 28 million, while government supporters call such claims exaggerations designed to discredit the president and undercut his credibility on the eve of the October Presidential elections. Ideology aside, and whatever the numbers, the sobering fact remains that in 2010, 94 percent of homicides were committed with firearms?36 percent of the victims were youths between the ages of 15 and 28, and the majority were males from the lower economic sectors. Regardless of political preference, it is clear that illegal firearms are killing Venezuelans, and that this is an issue that requires polarization politics to take a back seat and for Venezuelans of all stripes to come together and tackle the problem.

In May 2011, the Chavez administration established the Presidential Commission on Disarmament to tackle the ongoing illegal arms issue and develop public policies that promote disarmament. The commission, which included representatives from government agencies, academics, and civil society, and whose secretariat includes the knowledgeable groups, Red de Apoyo and Centro Gumilla, was tasked with analyzing where the arms were coming from and how legal arms were entering the black market. The commission also sought to bring diverse sectors of society into the discussion by soliciting ideas on how best to the address the problem through legislation and other means.

In 2000, 15 percent of Venezuela?s arms purchases came from the United States. Since the United States banned arm sales to Venezuela, the market has been dominated by Austria and its Glock gun, though Italy and Brazil have gained a larger foothold in recent years. The main issue, however, appears not to be the volume of arms available but who has control over the arms and what they do with them. While an illegal arms trade along Venezuela?s border with Colombia still exists, most arms used in urban homicides are not contraband but arms that entered the country legally and subsequently became illegal.

Rental Properties in San Bernardino, CA

Rent Sense: Rental Ownership is a Unique Business
By Neil Fjellestad & Chris De Marcos
FBS Property Management

We have built a healthy San Diego business out of advising independent real estate investors, acquiring and managing rental properties for clients while providing superior housing alternatives for qualified renters. Our business of four decades provides us a practical snapshot of the local economy.

So, what does our experience tell us about the unique rental housing business in San Diego? Here are some highlights that have remained pretty constant over the last year or so -

? With rare exception our renters pay on time every month.? Rent payment has taken its appropriate place as a financial priority as it is clearly their largest household expense.

? Renters want to pay their rent online. They want the privacy, security and convenience of this method. Since providing our renters with this alternative they pay sooner and avoid additional late charges.

? Most of our rental owners are responsive to capital requirements to improve their properties though often forced to defer or accomplish in stages due to personal financial constraints. This is an excellent time to get improvements done on time and for less.

? Our rental owners can?t afford to allow a non-paying renter and they can?t abide extended vacancy. The number of days rented is more important than the rate so a year?s lease is normally required while a substantial premium is required for a month-to-month alternative.

? Most of our clients that are involved with either selling or re-financing become extremely frustrated with the lack of expected results and/or the extension of the time to accomplish.

? The cost and time to accomplish daily routines that require permission and/or cooperation with governmental agencies and public authorities continues to grow and frustrate due to cutbacks in most departments.

? We can see from the employment information provided by renewing and potential renters that most of the jobs lost over the last 3-4 years are gone. Employers have determined other ways to accomplish or greater productivity just requires fewer to get the job done. Other jobs are being created but with different requirements and rewards.

? Small businesses like ours will hire and/or expand cautiously when and if they can control risks (the cost of doing business) while believing that the benefits of growth outweigh the alternatives.

Princeton University develops videogames for fish

Researchers at Princeton University have created videogames to study the behaviour of fish.

By projecting red dots into the tank of the predatory bluegill sunfish, researchers are able to study how the they'll swim after their prey, the BBC reports.

The team discovered that the bluegill sunfish were less likely to attack the dots when they were grouped together.

"By creating immersive video game for the fish we were able to have complete control over the parameters," said Dr Iain Couzin, senior researcher at Princeton University's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

"Trying to do this experiment with natural grouping prey items, it would have been impossible to understand or control what was going on."

The researchers went to great effort to conceal the dots' true identity. "An undergraduate student worked the entire summer on the exact type of dot to use. We tested out a whole range of different types of dots," said Couzin. "We knew they liked to target slightly red objects, we knew the speed of their natural prey... As far as we know the fish were not aware that (our graphics) were just little dots."

Couzin explained that it was important that the dots' AI didn't become too predictable, else the fish would catch on to their patterns, just as we do in our games.

"In any computer game if you have one type of enemy it's easy to learn," said Couzin. "It would be fascinating to understand whether the fish learned to play the game better over time."

Next on the docket, Couzin and his team will bolster the simulation into "a fully 3D virtual world to these organisms."

"We're developing an automating tracking system so we can track the position of their eyes and reconstruct a virtual world of prey items, using conventional projectors," he explained.

Now what I want to know is whether the fish will become competitive and try to beat each others' high scores.

This is metal... for fish!

Nik Goodman Media Consulting: Bob Lefsetz - The Modern Era

Bob Lefsetz is an American music industry figure, prolific blogger and former lawyer in the music and entertainment business. One of the mian themes he explores in his blog is?the diminishing role of the major record labels in current recorded music, and corresponding increasing influence and importance of grassroots artist activities such as live performances and direct online relationships with fans. He directs much of his writing at artists and those working within the music business. His posts are often inflammatory, but at the same time have a ring of truth about them, making them quite addictive reading. I thought I?d share his latest one here with you, as it echoes the sentiment of a discussion I had with a 16 year old American girl recently, who when I asked her how she gets her music, she listed every available source ?except the radio. and laughed when I asked if she bought albums...

The Modern Era

Artists are supposed to lead, not follow. How come they're still making albums? Did you see that Rihanna topped the British charts last week after selling 9,578 copies of her album "Talk That Talk"? This in a country of 60 million! It was the lowest sales number in history! Let's blame it on the public. Let's blame it on the retailers. Let's blame it on the record companies. When do the artists start blaming themselves? People only want the hits. Now this is not true of everybody. Are there still people purchasing the long player and spinning it ad infinitum, learning every lyric? Of course! Just like there are still people buying CDs, purchasing vinyl and composing letters on a typewriter. The album is the sideshow. And so is vinyl. It's a trend so small, without the mainstream press none of us would even be aware of it. Of course vinyl sounds better, but it's inconvenient! Just like landlines sound better than cell phones. But you don't see people forgoing calls outside the home, hell, they're canceling their landlines, using mobiles in their abode! While you were busy in the studio, concocting your long player, figuring out the running order, designing the cover, divining the perfect release date, you were functioning in a bubble. That's not how anybody listens anymore. You want to know how they listen? They pull up your track on YouTube. Whether in an authorized version on Vevo or a bootlegged take posted straight to YouTube. And they instantly decide whether they like it or not. And if they don't, they forget about you. Just that fast. It's like they're carrying your album straight to the dumper. As if you walked into McDonald's, sniffed and left and they threw all the food out and closed the doors. As for listening to all twelve of your tracks, are you nuts! Don't tell me people have a short attention span, hell, they're marathoning "Breaking Bad" as I write this. They just don't have time for what is not exceptionally great, and if you can tell me ten albums from the last two years that are good from beginning to end, I'm all ears. Listening has changed. It used to be entertainment options were limited. You bought little and played that which you owned. And it's not only music, newspapers are competing with blogs, TV is competing with YouTube, everything's changing, are you? You've got to step up your game. You've got to focus on excellence. Assuming you want to break out of the wannabe ghetto. Just like in the U.S., where the middle class is evaporating, in art there are winners and losers, rich and poor, which side are you on? It's okay if you want to be a journeyman, eking out a living. Hell, maybe you're making a few bucks, but don't expect to become any bigger than you are. Not unless you make an undeniable track. And that track no longer has to be Top Forty beat-driven fodder. That's what "Somebody That I Used To Know" taught us. That the world is not controlled by gatekeepers. You can't make it if you really try, but if you try and try, and create something undeniable, you can. And the public is going to discover it on YouTube! Radio comes last. Hell, radio's been last ever since the advent of MTV. It's a coalition of followers, detached from humanity, losing power every day. 1. If you're a wannabe, feel free woodshedding, put online as much as you want, no one's paying attention anyway. You're just hoping to get lucky. Chances are, you never will. But this woodshedding and the online response allows you to explore and possibly find your niche. 2. If you've already made it, there are two tiers of material, throwaway and highly-hyped. Don't put a full court press behind anything that is not truly stellar. Everything else is a glimpse of your methods. Kind of like a rapper's mix tape. 3. If there is an album, it's an after the fact event. A collection of what's already been exposed. Kind of like the NOW series, except it's all been done by you. 4. Labels are focused on revenues, not careers. They want the album to live because of its high price and the attendant marketing that drives people to buy it. They're sticking to this paradigm the way a five year old continues to suck on a pacifier. It's a no-win situation, but they don't want to let go. 6. It's a streaming world. Don't focus on Spotify or MOG, you're too stupid to understand where we're going, hell, you're living in the past. Those services are ahead of the game, you're behind. Just look at that Nielsen report that said the number one listening outlet for teens was YouTube. YouTube is streaming. Just like Jessica Seinfeld mixed vegetables in cookies, YouTube has been selling you streaming and you're too ignorant to know it. YouTube is an on demand item. It's pull technology. Feed it. You do this by creating something people want to pull. And that requires either train-wreck novelty or quality. And you can marshal your troops to go there, but this doesn't work more than once if the music isn't good. As for mainstream press... Asking the newspaper to drive people to YouTube is like asking NBC to tell people to cut the cord and watch online video. It's like telling a right wing religious zealot to have an abortion. It's a disconnect. Expecting old media to change is to believe Coleco is going to rise from the ashes and return triumphant. 7. The cycle has shortened. Your public can handle new music every other month. 8. It's about the performance. It's about live. Not because the ticket prices are high and you can make dough there, but because it's the one place where the audience can expect something new, different and alive. If you're playing to hard drive, repeating your record, you're missing an opportunity. What an audience likes most is a special show. A different set list. A special guest. This is the essence of the Grateful Dead's career. Every show was a unique event. And just like in the heyday of the Dead, great shows live on, with recordings. They embellish your career, they don't kill it. They make people want to go to the show and have their own magic moments. 9. All bets are off. Your music doesn't have to sound like anybody else's. It's just like the seventies, when Warner/Reprise ruled. We want unique. As media conglomerates merge, the public is running away. That's what the Web is all about. Feed the people, not the machine.

Prostate cancer: Six things men should know about tomatoes, fish oil, vitamin supplements, testosterone, PSA tests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? When it comes to prostate cancer, there's a lot of confusion about how to prevent it, find it early and the best way -- or even whether -- to treat it. Below are six common prostate cancer myths along with research-based information from scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to help men separate fact from fiction.

Myth 1 -- Eating tomato-based products such as ketchup and red pasta sauce prevents prostate cancer. "The vast majority of studies show no association," said Alan Kristal, Dr.Ph., associate director of the Hutchinson Center's Cancer Prevention Program and a national expert in prostate cancer prevention. Kristal and colleagues last year published results of the largest study to date that aimed to determine whether foods that contain lycopene -- the nutrient that puts the red in tomatoes -- actually protect against prostate cancer.

After examining blood levels of lycopene in nearly 3,500 men nationwide they found no association. "Scientists and the public should understand that early studies supporting an association of dietary lycopene with reduced prostate cancer risk have not been replicated in studies using serum biomarkers of lycopene intake," the authors reported in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. "Recommendations of professional societies to the public should be modified to reflect the likelihood that increasing lycopene intake will not affect prostate cancer risk."

Myth 2 -- High testosterone levels increase the risk of prostate cancer. "This is a lovely hypothesis based on a very simplistic understanding of testosterone metabolism and its effect on prostate cancer. It is simply wrong," Kristal said. Unlike estrogen and breast cancer, where there is a very strong relationship, testosterone levels have no association with prostate cancer risk, he said. A study published in 2008 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, which combined data from 18 large studies, found no association between blood testosterone concentration and prostate cancer risk, and more recent studies have confirmed this conclusion.

Myth 3 -- Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) decrease prostate cancer risk. "This sounds reasonable, based on an association of inflammation with prostate cancer and the anti-inflammatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids," Kristal said. However, two large, well-designed studies -- including one led by Kristal that was published last year in the American Journal of Epidemiology -- have shown that high blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids increase the odds of developing high-risk prostate cancer.

Analyzing data from a nationwide study of nearly 3,500 men, they found that those with the highest blood percentages of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, an inflammation-lowering omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in fatty fish, have two-and-a-half times the risk of developing aggressive, high-grade prostate cancer compared to men with the lowest DHA levels. "This very sobering finding suggests that our understanding of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids is incomplete," Kristal said.

Myth 4 -- Dietary supplements can prevent prostate cancer. Several large, randomized trials that have looked at the impact of dietary supplements on the risk of various cancers, including prostate, have shown either no effect or, much more troubling, they have shown significantly increased risk. "The more we look at the effects of taking supplements, the more hazardous they appear when it comes to cancer risk," Kristal said. For example, the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), the largest prostate cancer prevention study to date, was stopped early because it found neither selenium nor vitamin E supplements alone or combined reduced the risk of prostate cancer. A SELECT follow-up study published last year in JAMA found that vitamin E actually increased the risk of prostate cancer among healthy men. The Hutchinson Center oversaw statistical analysis for the study, which involved nearly 35,000 men in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Myth 5 -- We don't know which prostate cancers detected by PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening need to be treated and which ones can be left alone. "Actually, we have a very good sense of which cancers have a very low risk of progression and which ones are highly likely to spread if left untreated," said biostatistician Ruth Etzioni, Ph.D., a member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division.

In addition to blood levels of PSA, indicators of aggressive disease include tumor volume (the number of biopsy samples that contain cancer) and Gleason score (predicting the aggressiveness of cancer by how the biopsy samples look under a microscope). Gleason scores range from 2-5 (low risk) and 6-7 (medium risk) to 8-10 (high risk).

"Men with a low PSA level, a biopsy Gleason score of 6 or lower and very few biopsy samples with cancer are generally considered to be very low risk," Etzioni said. Such newly diagnosed men increasingly are being offered active surveillance -- a watchful waiting approach -- rather than therapy for their disease, particularly if they are older or have a short life expectancy.

"The chance that these men will die of their disease if they are not treated is very low, around 3 percent," she said. Similarly, such men who opt for treatment have a mortality rate of about 2 percent. "For the majority of newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer, giving initial clinical and biopsy information, we can get a very good idea of who should be treated and who is likely to benefit from deferring treatment."

Myth 6 -- Only one in 50 men diagnosed with PSA screening benefits from treatment. "This number, which was released as a preliminary result from the European Randomized Study of Prostate Cancer Screening, is simply incorrect," Etzioni said. "It suggests a very unfavorable harm-benefit ratio for PSA screening. It implies that for every man whose life is saved by PSA screening, almost 50 are overdiagnosed and overtreated."

"Overdiagnosis" is diagnosing a disease that will never cause symptoms or death in the patient's lifetime. "Overtreatment" is treating a disease that will never progress to become symptomatic or life-threatening.

The 50-to-one ratio is based on short-term follow-up and "grossly underestimates" the lives likely to be saved by screening over the long term and overestimates the number who are overdiagnosed. "The correct ratio of men diagnosed with PSA testing who are overdiagnosed and overtreated versus men whose lives are saved by treatment long term is more likely to be 10 to one," she said.
