17 August 2012

Infineon is to project manage a new ?34million European smart grid research project which aims to reduce power losses occurring in energy distribution by 20%.

The Energy to Smart Grid (E2SG) project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with six German partner companies working on new technologies for distributing power. Overall, the project unites 31 business partners and research from nine different countries.

The German research partners are focusing on the smart meters and interfaces (voltage converters and communication technologies) connecting household appliances or lamps with the smart grid. In addition to Infineon, the German E2SG partners include the Fraunhofer Institute, NXP, Insta Elektro, RWTH Aachen University and Telefunken Semiconductors.

Of the total European budget of ?34m, the German partners are contributing ?4.9m, along with ?4.4m from the BMBF and ?1.9m from ENIAC Joint Undertaking.
