My friend who was visiting us in Spain, was hit by a foreign car that ran away, and we were only able to get the plates numbers. The car is badly damaged and she suffered minor neck injury.

So our aim in this article is provide you with additional information for a cases like yours, involving a foreign hit and run vehicle.

In case of collision, accident etc. by a vehicle with foreign registration license plate you should know that the driver of the vehicle and the foreign insurance company will be liable for any damage / harm caused.

But what happens in case of a hit and run vehicle or when the foreign vehicle does not have the mandatory insurance policy? In that case, the Spanish Motor Vehicle Insurance Office (Oficina Espa?ola de Aseguradores de Automoviles- OFESAUTO) must be contacted, to find out if there is an agreement between the Spanish National Insurance Office and the national insurance office of the country of the foreign vehicle.

If a treaty /agreement exist between both countries then the Spanish Motor Vehicle Insurance Office (OFESAUTO) will claim compensation or even pay for the damages when necessary.

If there is not an agreement between both countries then the Spanish National Insurance Pool (Consorcio de Seguros) should be contacted, as they could cover and pay for the damages suffered.
